Knee Joint Replacement:

A joint among any bones is the connection that lets them function in sync and in turn gives strength and definition to the whole skeletal system. Joints are an essential part of our system as they define our mobility. A knee joint plays an important role in the overall functioning of the lower body as it has multiple functionalities like supporting the upper body weight as well as providing mobility and movement to the lower body. Also, knee joint is a complete capsule filled with fluid to protect, preserve and serve as a gliding surface to the bones which inturn reduces the friction among them. Find the right place and best orthopaedic doctor for your joint replacement treatment so that you can bring back your movement.

Being one of the most complex joint in the body, it essentially consists of 3 parts:

  • The thigh bone (femur) and the large shin bone (tibia) meet to form the main knee joint.
  • The medial (inner) and lateral (outer) compartments of the joint.
  • The patella (knee cap) and the femur form the patellofemoral joint.

A tendon is the connection tough bands made up of soft tissue between leg muscles and knee bones which are essential for movement of the knee. Ligaments in turn are the tissue which connects the knee bones and is the reason for stability of the knee.

There are majorly 3 types of ligaments:

  • ACL (Anterior cruciate ligament) – Prevents the femur and tibia from sliding backward and forward respectively onto one another.
  • PCL (Posterior cruciate ligament) - Prevents the femur and tibia from sliding forward and backward respectively onto one another.
  • MCL (Medial collateral ligament) and LCL (Lateral collateral ligament) – Prevents the femur from side ward movement.

Knee Replacement or Knee Arthoplasty is necessary when the knee joint is worn out or damaged which inturn is affecting your mobility or causes pain even when the knee is in rest. Few of the most common causes for knee damage other than trauma are:

  • Osteoarthritis: One of the most common issues seen in knee joints which is caused because of the wear or tear to the cartilage. Stiffness in the knee along with knee pain and inflammation may be some of the visible symptoms of osteoarthritis.
  • ACL, PCL or MCL tear : ACL tear often needs a surgical repair whereas a PCL tear could be treated with physiotherapy.
  • Rheumatoid arthritis: It is an auto immune disease distinguished by the fact that it affects both sides of the body and not just one. Loss of functionality along with pain and stiffness can be some of the symptoms to watch out for.

Chondromalacia patella, meniscal tear, gout, septic arthritis etc are few of the other conditions which affect the knee joint.
